Richard L Banta II Obituary

Richard L Banta II (1955 - 2024)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Lee Banta II (Rich), age 69, of River Rouge, Michigan, who left us surrounded by love on September 27, 2024. Born on April 13, 1955, Rich was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many. His rebel spirit, sarcasm, and unwavering commitment to calling out all bullshit has left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals in Michigan and beyond. His sharp wit, dry sense of humor, love for his family, community and for that old time rock n roll will be deeply missed.

Rich was known for his work as a lawyer, having spent over four decades practicing law in Michigan, where he was admired as one of the sharpest attorneys on his feet in the courtroom. He knew the law, he knew how to present it and how to be persuasive. He served in the army during the Vietnam war, worked at Great Lakes Steel, was a teacher, mechanic, musician, and found great joy in working on his many motorcycles through the years. Whether it was through a shared laugh or a political rant, Richard left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Family was one of Richard’s greatest joys. He was a loving father to his children: Jazmyn, Roxy, Billy, Alex, and Eric, and a sweet grandfather to his three grandchildren, Dominic, Lucy, and Lincoln, who brought him endless happiness. He treasured time spent with his family, especially feeding sweets to his grandchildren and summers in the backyard.

Richard also had deep roots in his hometown of River Rouge. He was an active member of the community, frequently seen at community gatherings, and always showing up with a ready smile and pat on the back.

Richard is survived by his children, Jazmyn (Kevin) Bencik, Roxy (Mike) Borger, Bill Banta, Alex Banta, and Eric Banta; his grandchildren Dominic, Lucy, and Lincoln; his twin sister Rene Klein, and his siblings Jim (Arlene) Karell and Angela Karell-Burton. He was preceded in death by his first and last girlfriend and life partner Velida Gutierrez and his parents Dolly (Williams) Roach and Wes Roach.

A true celebration of life was held on October 26, 2024, in Wyandotte, Michigan. The family is grateful to all of Rich’s people who showed up to share stories and smiles. In lieu of flowers, the family received enough donations to install a memorial park bench in Rich’s honor at Bishop Park in Wyandotte, Michigan.

Rich will be remembered for his grit, his wit, his shit talking, and the never ending legal advice he gave so freely. His legacy will continue to live on through the lives he touched, and his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

May he rest in peace.
